Abstract

Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay (1894-1950), a representative short story writer of Bengali fiction. This narrator builds his story on the trinity of man, nature, and spiritual consciousness, seeking the totality of human life. In dissecting his short stories, it appears that the balanced use of idioms, characterisation techniques and rhetorical structure has elevated short stories to the highest standards of art. The main object of the present study is to find out the nature of the idiom and the technique of applying it in short stories. A qualitative approach was used in the study. In addition, text-analytic methods and, where applicable, comparative discussion methods have also been used. His short stories are characterised by simple, vivid language that promotes a close connection between readers and the characters and surroundings. His unusual language style merges poetic descriptions of nature with rustic vernacular in dialogue, conveying a feeling of humanity and regional reality. This research intends to offer a novel perspective on the linguistic aspects of Bengali short stories and urges a re- evaluation of Bandyopadhyay's works within language-based literary criticism.
